NMC Li-ion DEGRADATION

Experimental analysis and characterization of the degradation of NMC Li-ion Batteries
ACRONYM: NMC Li-ion DEGRADATION
YEARS: 2019-2020
FINANCING: GENERALITAT VALENCIANA

SUMMARY

The main objective of this project is the development and validation of a semi-empirical degradation model in the form of an adaptive electrochemical equivalent circuit (EEC) for state-of-the-art NMC Li-ion pouch cells due to calendar ageing. To do so, experimental tests are performed during 15 to 18 months with periodic measurements around the internal impedance of the cells and their retained capacity.

Specific objectives:

  • To test the degradation experienced by commercial NMC pouch cells under different temperatures and state-of-charge conditions by calendar ageing.
  • To analyze the impact of the monthly residual capacity and internal impedance tests on the ageing evolution.
  • To contrast and verify degradation trends published by other research groups for similar cells.
  • To develop an electrochemical equivalent circuit (EEC) model for NMC pouch cells.
  • To analyze the evolution of the EEC model parameters with time.
