MMC-HVDC

Renewable energy integration and power flow control in HVDC grids using modular multi-level power converters.
ACRONYM: MMC-HVDC
YEARS: 2015-2017
FINANCING: MINISTERIO DE INDUSTRIA, ECONOMÍA Y COMPETITIVIDAD

SUMMARY

Modular Multi level power converters can play a major role for massive integration of wind energy and for the control of the power flow in meshed HVDC grids. Power flow control in meshed networks is paramount to guarantee an efficient use of the infrastructure while ensuring a high degree of reliability and fault recovery.

The main objective of this project is the development and validation of novel, technologically sound Modular Multi-Level converter topologies and control algorithms for power flow control in meshed HVDC grids with large penetration of renewable energy.

Specific objectives

  • Develop new Modular Multilevel DC-DC converters for meshed HVDC grid power flow control, together with their control.
  • Develop new Modular Multilevel AC-DC-DC converters for meshed HVDC grid power flow control, together with their control.
  • Validate the developed converters in realistic conditions.
